Brazilian C Yan Gomes Tearing It Up For Blue Jays Big League Team In Spring Training

Yan Gomes is quietly putting together a very good spring training  in the Toronto Blue Jays major leage camp. Granted, he only has 14 at bats in 9 games, but he has done a lot with those at bats: 7 hits, 1 home run, 3 doubles, 4 RBI’s, .500 batting average and a 1.429 OPS.

Gomes is currently not on the Blue Jays 40-man roster, but given the other guys ahead of him at the catching position, there could be a real possibility that Gomes makes an appearance with the big league club at some point this season, assuming he starts off in Triple A and does well there. If there are any injuries, the likelihood goes up pretty quickly he could make it to Toronto. Right now, the Blue Jays are counting on incumbent starting catcher J.P. Arencibia to produce last year’s power numbers (23 HRs and 78 RBIs) without the .219 batting average, and they brought in weak hitting journeyman Jeff Mathis (career .195 batting average) into camp as a potential backup while highly touted prospect Travis d’Arnaud could likely spend another season in the minors getting more experience.

If Gomes can continue this pace, he might make the Blue Jays decision on what to do with him before Opening Day that more difficult. His hot hitting spring with the big leaguers already puts him as the favorite to be the first Brazilian-born player in the MLB, for now anyway.
